Being pregnant is such an exciting time! When I first found out I was Pregnant, so many things ran through my mind – including the gender of our baby.
Even though we did IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) – we did not do genetic testing on our embryo to find out the gender.
I got so many requests to do an Old Wive’s Tales video on my YouTube channel after announcing that we were pregnant with our IVF Miracle. I’ve always wanted to do one of these videos so I’m super happy that I was able to!
In the video I did 13 Old Wives Tales tests to predict the gender of our baby. We’re having a Gender Reveal party on August 24, 2019 so I wanted to get these out to see how accurate they are.
13 Fun Ways to Predict Baby’s Gender
This “test” is a simple one. The Chinese Calendar asks for the mother’s age at conception and the month of conception. It then tells you what you’re having based on that info.
Check out the Chinese Gender Predictor chart.
For us, because we did an IVF embryo transfer – our embryo was technically conceived in April after my Egg Retrieval surgery. However, our transfer was in June. I calculated our conception date as April along with my age at the time (28) and it came up GIRL.
This old wives tale says that if your baby’s heartbeat is above 140bpm, it’s a GIRL. Anything below 140bpm points to a BOY.
My OBGYN seems to be a fan of this one as well! I’ve had 3 ultrasounds and a doppler reading of the heartbeat so far in my First Trimester.
Funny story here, when I first met with my OBGYN at my 12 week prenatal appointment, she put the doppler on my stomach and immediately found the heartbeat. She then exclaimed “Oh you have a good baby! Oh, I think it’s a Girl. She’s got a STRONG heartbeat!”
All my heartbeats in my ultrasounds have been in the 160s to low 170s. So this gender prediction test points to GIRL.
They say if you have severe morning sickness then it points to a GIRL. Having a chill pregnancy with hardly any sickness? You’re having a BOY.
I haven’t had much morning sickness in my first trimester. I’ve had mild nausea here and there, but nothing extreme. So, for this gender prediction test – it points to me having a baby BOY.
For this old wives tale – if you’re craving sweet things, you’re having a baby GIRL. If you crave more salty, sour, or savory things – it’s a BOY.
I’m naturally not a sweet-toothed person – but I love sour candy. For most of this pregnancy so far, I have been craving Pizza and Sour Candy the most. So for this test, it points to me having a baby BOY.
This old wives tale talks about which side mommy sleeps on. It’s said that if you sleep on your left side more, you’re expecting a BOY. If you find yourself preferring to sleep on your right side, it’s a GIRL.
I usually sleep on my left side – but since getting pregnant, my right side has felt more comfortable to me. So this test is pointing to us having a GIRL.
Having more headaches this pregnancy? Old Wives Tales say more headaches point to you having a baby BOY. If you haven’t had any headaches, expect a little baby GIRL.
So far, I haven’t had any headaches this pregnancy so this tale points to me having a baby GIRL.
Ring Gender Prediction Test
This one was my highly requested “test” to do on my Instagram. For this test, take your wedding/engagement ring and loop a piece of your hair through it. Hang the ring over mama’s belly and wait.
If the ring swings in a circle, it means GIRL. If the ring swings back-and-forth, it’s a BOY.
In my Gender Predictions video, the ring swung in a circle above my belly! So, for this test, it points to me having a baby GIRL.
This one is gross… but apparently the color of your pee can tell you what you’re having. Urine tests are best done first thing in the morning.
If your pee is dull colored, it means you’re having a baby GIRL. If it’s bright, it points to a BOY.
In my video, I did this test in the afternoon so I don’t think I got an accurate result. However, my urine was brightly colored so this test is pointing to BOY.
Baking Soda Gender Prediction
Another urine test… however this one involves baking soda as well!
Using first morning urine, add equal parts baking soda and urine together in a cup. If the baking soda FIZZES (think soda or beer), then it’s a BOY. If nothing happens… GIRL.
Not sure how accurate this test is because I’ve done it a couple of times. Most of the time, nothing happened… a couple of times it fizzed up like beer. In my video above, however, it did fizz – so I’ll mark this for a BOY.
Dry or Oily Skin
The classic old wives tale talks about how if your skin is looking rough, oily, or acne-prone it means your beauty is being “stolen” from you by baby GIRL so she could have all the beauty for herself.
If your skin is on the more dry side – it means you are having a baby BOY.
I’ve been told I have the pregnancy glow from Instagram, YouTube, and in person by my nurses. I haven’t had any acne breakouts and my cheeks are naturally dry – so I’m not sure how to gauge this test. Since I’ve received the pregnancy glow compliments, I’m going to count this test for a BOY.
Good or Bad Hair Days?
We’ve all heard that pregnancy does wonders for your hair… or does it?
This Old Wives Tale says if your hair is shiny and full of volume – you’re having a baby BOY. If your hair is limp and dull – that beauty is being taken by your baby GIRL.
I marked this test as a BOY for me because my hair has been super soft, shiny, and looked like I just walked out of the salon all the time.
This theory talks about predicting the gender of your baby through dreams. They say that if you dream of a specific gender – you’ll have the OPPOSITE in real life.
If you dream of a baby girl – You’re having a BOY.
If you dream of a baby boy – You’re having a GIRL.
I’ve only had two baby-related dreams this pregnancy and both involved baby boys. So this theory is pointing to us having a baby GIRL.
Moody or Mellow
If you’ve been more mellow and chilled out during your pregnancy – you’re having a baby BOY. If you’ve been more irritated and moody, you’re having a GIRL.
My husband says I’ve been more chilled out and mellow since getting pregnant so this theory points to us having a BOY.
However, since we did IVF – we have been on cloud nine! So I’m not sure how accurate this theory is. 😉
Are Old Wives Tales Gender Predictions Accurate?
Obviously, a lot of these are just for fun and easy to do. If you’re impatient to find out what you’re having – these would make for fun gender reveal party games or something to do with your significant other.
